This is always one of the first things I would check.

Your AC pulls warm air from the house, moves it across the cold evaporator coil, and sends cooled air back through the ductwork.

A dirty filter restricts that airflow.

Less airflow means your system cannot remove heat from the house as effectively.

Pull the filter out and look at it.

Replace it if:

  • It is visibly packed with dust
  • Airflow from the vents seems weaker
  • It has been installed longer than recommended
  • You cannot easily see the filter material anymore

More filtration is not always better either. Choosing the right furnace filter means balancing indoor air quality with the amount of airflow your HVAC system was designed to handle.

2. Your Outdoor Condenser Is Dirty

The outdoor AC unit has to get rid of all the heat your system removes from inside the house.

That becomes harder as outdoor temperatures rise.

If the condenser coil is covered in dirt, cottonwood, grass clippings, leaves, or other debris, the system may still perform reasonably well on a cool night but struggle badly during a hot afternoon.

Take a look around the outdoor unit.

You can safely:

  • Remove loose leaves
  • Pull weeds away from it
  • Trim vegetation

I would not recommend taking the condenser apart or aggressively pressure washing the coil yourself. The fins are easy to damage, and electrical components are located inside the cabinet.

If that coil becomes dirty, heat transfer drops.
