Furnace Facts

Common things every customer with a furnace should know

  • Average furnace life expectancy is 20 years of age. If your heating system is 15 years or older its time to start preparing for the inevitable.
  • Replace your filter monthly, using a standard non pleated filter. If you cant find a non pleated filter in your size buy the cheapest pleated filter you can find. Filter manufactures make all sorts of filters with multiple ratings like Merv, or Home Depots FPR rating. What do these mean for you? Merv and FPR are ratings on how well the filter can well, filter. The more pleated and thicker the material, the better the filter. That does not mean it is better for your system. In fact it is more likely worse for your system. As every filter gets dirty less air gets through your filter into your air ducts. This means your system will run longer and be less efficient for you home. If air quality is important to you there is a product for you that won’t create issues in your system.
  • Have your furnace serviced once a year. Typically before winter. This will help you stay ahead of any potential problems your system is likely to face in the coming months.
  • A humidifier can make you more comfortable in winter by adding humidity to the air. Humidity holds more heat then dry air. This means you are more likely to lower your thermostat because it will fill warmer in your home. Humidifiers will also prevent wood gaping in hard woods and those nasty static electrical shocks will be a thing of the past.
